SOLAPUR is one of the
important districts of Maharashtra State in India. It is located in the
southern part of Maharashtra. The
famous religious places like Pandharpur and Akkalkot are in Solapur district
only. Solapur has its own history. It is known for Textile industry. Solapur is
transport hub connecting Maharashtra,
Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. It is well connected by Road and Rail to major
districts and cities. Solapur city is 250 kms away from Pune
About University
Solapur University was established on 1st August
2004 .The formation of the university at Solapur was a long cherished desire of
the people of this region. Within a brief span of 8 years the university
has taken significant stride towards excellence .Solapur University has
been established to cater the needs of over 60,000 student’s community. The
university is poised for an ambitious growth. The University is now a hub of
various academic activities..In Solapur University there are 7 schools and 21 innovative
courses are offered to the students.
About School of Social Sciences
The School, since its inception in the year 2008, has been wedded to the
mission objective “Engage Social Sciences as Science” in
comprehending societal processes.
Keeping in view the reforms
in higher education that are pervading the country especially, in the context
of globalization, the School of Social Sciences offers interdisciplinary
learning. Unlike the conventional teaching, the School emphasizes for the
transformation of personality of the students in addition to curricular
teaching. The School intends to engage social sciences to understand and
interpret social processes and suggests appropriate policy interventions. To
meet this objective, the School adopts innovative teaching methods, which
involve strong theoretical orientation supported by skill development and
practical application. Workshops, seminars, debates and group discussions are the
regular features of students’ learning. The courses offered under the aegis of
the School include Fieldwork and Practical as integral parts of the
curriculum.
The School has four Departments
viz., Ancient Indian History, Culture & Archaeology; Journalism and Mass
Communication; Rural Development; and Applied Economics. The Departments offer
two- year full time Masters Courses in the subjects concerned.
Department of Journalism and Mass
Communication
The expansion of mass
media and communication in the country has created an unprecedented demand for
media professionals to meet the growing needs of media industry. To meet the
demand for skilled manpower the Department has introduced two- year M.A. course
in Journalism and Mass Communication from the academic year 2009-10. The main
objective of this course is to enable students to acquire technical skills and
writing and communication skills required by the media houses. Students are
taught theories and concepts of Mass Communication as per the UGC guidelines.
Successful students would make career in teaching, research and as journalists
in Print, Electronic Media and Corporate Sector. The students of the previous
batches got excellent placements in the press in and around Solapur.
About Seminar
The dawn of 21st century has been
endorsed as an era of communication media. The advancement in communication and
information technology has facilitated the process of globalization and made
this globe, a village. While reducing physical and social distance between
societies, these processes have delegated new roles and responsibility to media
to address the societal needs and engage in bringing out a desirable change and
desirable society. In the pursuit of this new role, the media and information
technology have to prioritize the vital social issues that are confronting
society and set an agenda of action for appropriate interventions. A wide array
of issues which need urgent attention today range from social inequalities to
sustainable development; illiteracy, ignorance to knowledge society; and
economic recession to ecological concerns. In all these spheres the functions of media
and communication are intrinsic and intricate. Against this backdrop, this
seminar intends to provide a platform to articulate this new roles and
functions for the media houses and to promote building of an egalitarian social
order. The central objective of this seminar is to provide a stage for the activists,
academic fraternity, media professionals, officials and intellectuals concerned
with media and society, to deliberate on the themes and sub-themes of the
seminar and set an agenda for the future action. Also, it is expected that the deliberation
of this seminar will culminate into policy suggestions for implementation. The
paper presenters are expected to contribute their papers on the following sub-themes
which are indicative. Scholars are encouraged to contribute papers and case
studies on any other related themes of the seminar.
